Massachusetts is a land of quiet beauty. Today, I met a runner who shared a story about his time running with Karel back in 2018. Sometimes, the past has a way of walking beside us, reminding us of the journeys we’ve taken.

Entering Massachusetts, I made a small misstep. Trusting the FarOut guides, I followed the map, only to find myself lost in the woods, chasing the white blazes on trees that seemed to lead nowhere. It was a humbling reminder that even the best plans can veer off course. I ended up taking the road for a while, adding a few extra miles to the journey.

When I caught up with the crew, my mom pointed out a man who reminded her so much of her brother, my Uncle Sean. It was uncanny how the family resemblance echoed in his face.

That night, I camped in a peaceful spot. A shower, courtesy of Ice Man’s water tank on top of his truck, offered a welcome cleanse after a long day of dirt and dust. Sometimes, it’s the simplest comforts that mean the most.

As for food? I can’t recall the details, but I think I ate some leftover brisket.

I’m endlessly grateful for a crew like Ice Man and Gun Section. Their presence on the trail isn’t just helpful—it’s a gift. The memories we’ve forged together are timeless, unique moments I’ll carry with me forever.

When I return to the Appalachian Trail this year, I’m looking forward to passing through Massachusetts again, to soak in its beauty and the spirit of its people.
