Appalachian Trail day 28

30 mile day

It’s been nearly 2 months since I have run a 30 miles or more day. During an FKT attempt on the Appalachian Trail a 30 mile day is failure, for the hikers it’s a big day. I’m pleased with today’s 30 miles as a hiker.

A thru hiker said to me the other day… “I wish we met earlier, my friends on the trail told me your a good guy”. I pondered after this was said to me about how I judge myself, success in running, personal goals and so on. This comment made me feel good on the inside that I’m liked by others, certainly this a form of success.

I still haven’t seen any moose, I’m staying optimistic as we have many Ponds to pass before we finish.

I kept pace with the Dirty Bubble today. They made a plan to finish the 100 mile Wilderness in four days. So far I’m on track, would be cool to summit with them. If I decide to summit.

When I net David Horton he told me not to summit and save it for when I finish my FKT attempt. But this is a different journey, we will see.

I saw a Bald Eagle a few days ago when crossing the Kennebec river. A hiker told me their wingspan is 7 feet, that’s a big bird. As it flew off I could see it for a long time before it disappeared into the sky.

Today started with rain, but it didn’t bother me as I was prepared. Upon waking I had all my stuff ready, was quick and organised to break down camp.

Most of today was a blur of endurance thru the woods. As the sun was setting later in the evening, the woods became mystical and enchanting reminding me of the Australian outback.

The golden light a stark contrast to the glowing daylight which had passed. I kicked a sharp root with my foot whilst admiring the beauty.

The Dirty bubble arrived at Nahmakanta Stream Lean-to just before I was ready to retire into my tent.

What really did stand out today was Super Girl and her mum Super mum. Super Girl was just 7 years old and since February have hiked 2100 miles of the Appalachian trail and has less than 100 miles till she completes.

Super girl had a knowing look in her eyes. It’s amazing to think she has endured all the suffering a thru hike takes to complete. Will She grow with a sense of I did that what else is possible?
