A heatwave is relentlessly testing the states of New York and New Jersey, as though the universe is turning up the intensity. The sun blazes overhead, and the ground beneath me seems to hum with the energy of the sky’s heat. I find myself immersed in the challenge, feeling as though I’ve stepped into a sauna. Every time I pass a stream, I pause, carefully placing my shoes on the edge to keep them dry, then I submerge my upper body into the coolness, a fleeting but welcome relief from the blazing sun.
Through it all, my crew remains my anchor. Ice Man and Gun Section—my pillars of support. Upon reaching each crew stop, I sink into my chair, Ice Man presses ice to the back of my neck and shoulders, while Gun Section nourishes me with vital calories. It’s a dance of resilience, of pushing past limits and finding strength in camaraderie.
As I prepare for this year’s FKT attempt on the Appalachian Trail, I’ve learned to embrace the heat, the rain, and the mud. Yet, I remain open to the unknown challenges that lie ahead. With each step, I grow stronger, knowing that whatever comes, I will be ready.
